Cape Verdi - 1st March to 8th March 2007

The Cape Verdi Islands are situated about 800 miles south of the Canaries and are therefore the closest tropical islands to the UK. As well as being sunny all year round, there is usually a strong wind blowing. As there is little on the island of Sal other than sand and salt, when the wind is at its strongest a light dusting of sand covers everything. Also, the wind masks the true heat of the sun - even in March.

We only went there for one week and stayed at a Riu hotel near the bottom of Sal Island and near the village of Santa Maria. The hotel was huge with 6 restuarants and 10 bars but everything was of a high quality with terrific food available most of the day and drinks available all day (it is an all-inclusive!).

We met some wonderful people who appear on the links below. I hope they dont mind being seen by everyone on the internet. Thanks to them all for helping us eat and drink too much !

Maps of Cape Verdi A few maps of the islands plus a couple of diagrams to show the shape and size of the hotel.
Hotel and Beach Pictures of the hotel and the surrounding area - mainly beach and salt flats
The People we met These are the people that helped make the holiday for us
The Island of Sal Taken mainly on a day trip around the island, one of the highlights was a view of the desalination plant - but I didnt get a photo! We also went to a salt quarry and floated!
Santa Maria Santa Maria was the closest village to the hotel and was a strange mix of local people, tourists and building sites.
The Boat Trip This is really a glass bottomed boat but very effective
