Monday 3rd October Flew from Gatwick to Corfu. Landed in the afternoon and were driven to the hotel (Marbella). Explored the hotel, went for dinner and then watched the hotel entertainment where the hotel dancers did Grease.

Tuesday

Weather good all day. Swimming pool very cold, sea quite warm. Stayed around the hotel and beach area for a while. The beach at the hotel is a man-made area which has had sand added, but had steps down into the sea. Met a chap on the beach who we thought was a dodgy geezer who asked if we wanted to go on a boat trip on Thursday. Gave him 10euros deposit on the offchance it would be OK.

Lots of different nationalities in the hotel - plus a German oompah band - see photos.

Jumped on a local bus to Cavos at the south end of the island (about 1 hour away). Renowned for nightlife, this town was almost closed - end of season - but still looked tacky. Cavos has a good beach and very shallow sea.

Wednesday Local bus into Corfu Town. Getting a local bus is always an interesting experience! The town was nice. Quite small but a very complicated layout so it was easy to get lost, especially when you have a map with English words but all the signs are in Greek!
Thursday One of the highlights of the holiday - the boat trip. We went over to the Greek mainland, stopped in Sivota for refreshments (!) and then went to a small beach where we swam and snorkelled. Stopped at a nice taverna on the way back.

Friday Local bus again - this time to Messongi and Moraitika. These were larger than the place we were staying - which isnt even on the map! The highlight for today was the evening dinner at a fish restuarant in an even smaller place called Boukaris. We seemed to be driving - or rather being driven by Raffaele (with Alex navigating) for ages along a narrow seaside road and finally found the restaurant. Had to go into the kitchen to choose the fish we wanted. It had a Greek name so we have no idea what is was but it was brilliant. We also had some octopus, mussels and some marinated anchovies - all very nice, and a whole squid stuffed with cheese and herbs- about a foot long - Raf ate the head and tenticles!
Saturday

Into Corfu Town again as the weather was a bit iffy. This time we walked around the sea side of the town, past the fort, the old port and then the ferry port. Found there was a military parade and they were playing the Russian national anthem (but we had no idea why!). They were also firing guns in the air. We walked through the fish and vegetable market in Corfu town.

Back to the hotel and down to the 2 tavernas on the main road at the bottom of the hotel (which was on a steep hill). Cocktails in the first taverna - cheaper but not very friendly. The second taverna (which we had been in a few times already) was a bit more expensive but the atmosphere was better.

Sunday

Last full day. Went on the hotel beach for most of the day and went in a sea a few times. It was a good area for snorkelling.

Another superb meal in the fish restaurant at Boukaris. This time there were 8 of us and we chose a large whole sea bass as well as various other fish.

Monday 10th October

Time to pack. The sea was too rough to swim and the waves were breaking up the wooden platforms that had been built by the hotel. By about 10.30 the sun was out and it was very hot. We had to go for lunch again at the local taverna.

Taxi picked us up at about 2pm local time and we got home at about 8.30pm.
